Are Americans really obssesed with "celebrities" or is just the media who wants them to be

I find it quite interesting how the media keeps saying that Americans are obsessed with famous people, however in real life i found this be rather the other way. i think is the media who wants you to think you are really interested in famous people's lifes so you keep buying those stupid magazines and watching those gossip tv shows. I think that Americans (at least the ones over sixteen years old) are more concern with their own lifes, problems and responsabilities rather than thinking about Amy Winehouses's hair color and ****. it bothers me every time i go to yahoo and all the "news" that they showcase is about celebrities, singing animals, and stuff like that.

Do you feel the same way? Any opinions?

I agree half way, and I'll tell you why.

If you think about it, the media started this. If it wasnt for them reporting it, none of us would have known anything about the celebrities personal lives.

I do think that a lot of the public are obsessed though, You would be surprised just how many people ignore there own lives and use celebs as a way to escape.. even those that are my age, and I am well over 16. The public DO determine who the media will report on, there not about to try and sell something that no one is interested in, they'd be loosing money.

But I will say this, if every single person stopped giving two shits about celebrities, the media would obsess over something else, to the point where, like you said, would have us thinking that its important and something to be idolized.

People are hypnotized fairly easily, and sadly, the television is a -very- powerful thing. I think the media glamourizes these people and their lives so much, and by being told how "wonderful" "smart" "beautiful" "amazing" these people are, after a while, many people realy believe it. Its the same as, if your told something about yourself enough times, after a while you realy believe it to be true, whether its positive or even negative.

So yeah, the media makes us feel that we -should- be obsessed, and because of it, people literally become that way.

MEDIA because i feel they are intitled to their privacy just like me and you... i feel bad forthem at times because they have none.

Well, if you ask somebody on the street do they care about celebrities, it might look silly or foolish of them to admit that they might. they might be closet-obsessors.

But most of the time I do agree, I think that it's reverse psycology.

I'm one American who could care less what's going on with the celebrities. The men go from woman to woman %26amp; the women go from man to man. I'm not impressed one bit. The media has nothing better to do than to shove it down our throats!!!!!

I agree with you 100%. It's the media. They do that to justify their exsistance. I could care less about celebs life outside of the movies or what ever they do for a living. The media make some of the most outlandish statements I have ever heard. You deserve a star for that question, Thanks.

Yeah, stupid people can't worry about their own lives.......
