I would love to get a column with my local news paper, any hints to bag the job?

Write up a bunch of articles on topics dear to your heart. Mimic the style of writers in magazines or papers that you admire. Submit a few of your best samples with a cover letter to the editor and request a meeting.

Bertie Smylie, the former editor of the Dublin Times used to tell eager young journalists to either tell him something he didn't know...or something he didn't think they were capable of saying!

Try writing articles about local events you've attended and submit them to the paper perhaps with a photo......then offer to write more if the like or us it...

Write a few 700 to 1000-word OpEd pieces and submit them. Follow up with phone calls. Get feedback (this might be hard, but it must be done). Be persistent. Submit, submit, submit.

My local paper has a cloumn by a local hairdresser....he talks about fashion and a bit of celeb gossip...he also does a thing where he stops a girl in the street in our town and takes a pic and features her in his column for her hair and outfit.

Write or email the Editor, suggesting the column....write a sample one and include it....you could even do the stopping the girl in the street thing and include a pic as an example of what you are going to do each week.

Some people suggest that you shouldn't bother writing the column till' you've sounded out the editor, but columns should be quite short and so it wont make much difference between reading a letter of suggestion to the actual column.

I'm thinking that you should first learn how to use puncuation, prose style, syntax, and how to use capitalization..

an artist is normally dominate in their right frontal lobe.. but a writer must have consumate organizational skills, which is the left basil lobe of the brain.. if you are dominate in the right frontal lobe and are working in a job that requires you to use your left basil, it takes 100 times the metabolic energy to process information.. Just a thought!!

Generally you don't 'bag' a columnist's job until you've earned your way into writing one by doing the little stories. However if you have an expertise in something as it appears you do, you might write some sample articles and give them to either the managing editor or the newsroom editor. A call to the paper can tell you which one to send it to.

Then prepare your resume , just like you're going to a job interview. Have your references ready, copies of your awards etc in a portfolio that you are prepared to leave with whomever.

Dress conservatively but may I suggest you lose" the atitude" that like Paris Hilton , you're hot.

He /she may not agree and an aggressive attitude won't win you any points, more than likely it'll get filed under g for garbage after you leave.

Then again if you newspaper has a community editorial board, you might just apply for that and see if you get picked.

I'm sure it'll be an interesting adventure for you, you must let us know what happens.

Place your business adverts with your local paper - get to know the staff. If there's perhaps a charity fashion show taking place, offer to to make-up and hair for the models in return for publicity and request your write your own article and take it from there. Alternatively, write about a subjects you are interested in and submit it for publication, if enough are published regularly your foot is in the door to geting your own column.
