How to curl hair correctly?
Seeing the 1st photo, I think she used a flat iron to make the weaves.. but if you want to have your hair like that.. use the one you have.. but dont live your hair on that for too long because It will turn out very curly!

It looks like it's larger than even a 2" curling iron, once you have one of those I guess you just only take small inches of it and put it in

If you are using a 1 1/4" iron you should be taking no more than a 1inch section of hair in that iron at a time. I like to pin all of the hair up except for a small section. Curl. then Drop another section and repeat.
Make sure you can feel the heat come through the iron b/f you take the curl out. Also using a thermal styling spray will help hold the curl better.
If this still doesn't work invest in a better curling iron. I would recommend going to Sally's Beauty Supply, they sell a better product than say Walmart.

There are different types of curl. The first picture is what you call CHI curls. They are made by using a flat iron and twisting as you go down the hair shaft. The second picture has loose waves. I would take your curling iron and wrap a small section of hair around the barrel, roots first. Don't clamp. the hair. just manually wrap it around the barrel. Let go whenever you can feel the heat through the hair.

Do not start at the bottom. That will help.
Start at the middle(ish) and wind your hair around your iron. Once you've got most of your hair wrapped around your iron turn the iron VERTICAL. Hold it this way for several seconds and unwind your hair while your iron is still in the VERTICAL position.
Those are some basic instructions to help you get the hang of it. The key is to keep it vertical.
